Rapid urbanisation and lack of remunerative employment opportunities are compelling rural poor to migrate to the cities for better life and good job prospects. However, the only viable option for these poverty-stricken families is to move to urban slum areas which are plagued with the issues of poor sanitation facilities, unavailability of safe drinking water and hygiene issues, sexual exploitation, abuse of women & children. Moving to far flung suburbs also means moving away from good schools, hospitals.
Sahasee Embers has identified a need to bring quality education, healthcare, and build skills to empower Women, Youth and Children who have been victims of this rapid urbanisation. There is a need to provide a Safe & Learning Environment for the Children, a Community which is able to prevent Abuse & Exploitation. In order to sustain its efforts, there is a need to build partnerships and access local community resources.
Addressing Human Rights
Vulnerable Women & Children often face numerous human rights violations, including exploitation, abuse, and discrimination. Sahasee Embers has learnt that working with them allows for direct engagement with these vulnerable individuals and aims to protect and promote their fundamental human rights.
Health and Well-being
Many of the community women in the area lack access to adequate healthcare services, including sexual and reproductive health services, HIV prevention and treatment, and mental health support. Sahasee Embers intends to contribute to improving their health outcomes and overall well-being. These involve providing medical care, facilitating awareness campaigns, offering counselling services.
Reducing Stigma and Discrimination
As Sahasee Embers works with a considerable number of women engaged in Commercial sex workers, Persons Living with HIV, these communities face significant social stigma and discrimination, which further marginalises them and limits their opportunities for social and economic inclusion. Engaging with this population would help challenge prevailing stereotypes and negative perceptions, leading to greater acceptance and support from the broader society. It would contribute to building a more inclusive and tolerant community.
Empowerment and Skill-building
Sahasee Embers has identified a need to provide an opportunity to empower these individuals by offering skill-building workshops, vocational training, and educational programs. By equipping them with new skills and knowledge, they can explore alternative livelihood options.
Community Development
By focusing on the needs of slums, Sahasee Embers can contribute to the overall development of these communities. This involves initiating projects related to education, and economic opportunities, improving the living condition. Such comprehensive community development efforts can bring about positive change and long-term sustainability.
Advocacy and Policy Change
It is to the credit of Sahasee Embers that engaging the community has provided firsthand experiences and insights into the challenges they face. By amplifying their voices and advocating for their rights, Sahasee Embers can work towards policy changes that support their well-being and protect their rights. There is a need to collaborate with local authorities, NGOs, and policymakers to influence legislation, improve social protection measures, and establish comprehensive support systems for this marginalised population.
Breaking the Cycle
By addressing the root causes and underlying issues that lead to family poverty, limited education, and lack of opportunities, Sahasee Emberscan contribute to breaking the cycle of exploitation. Through empowerment and alternative livelihood options, individuals can gain the resources and support they need to transition into more sustainable and fulfilling lives.
Sahasee Embers wants to make a dent in this new age of slavery, by educating, empowering and restoring the lives of the trafficked victims as well as the marginalised community that are part of the urban poor community
